The New Facebook. Why All the Hate?

This past week Facebook has officially pushed the “New Facebook” out to users. This new and improved version of Facebook has been available for a few months to users who wanted to try it out. I’ve been using it for probably a month or two and wasn’t aware that it was still optional. I assumed that everyone was using it by now.

The new layout... if you've been living under a rock.

After loads of hateful status messages started to appear in my news feed yesterday, I realized that Facebook must have just pushed out the new update to users. Personally, I love the new facebook. I think they’ve done an excellent job of cleaning up the applications that were junking up the homepage. They’ve merged the mini-feed and the wall and added a lot of useful feed filters to control the way you consume that information. I really like this change too! I LOVE the new photo gallery that “wipes” the thumbnails from right to left when you click on the next page. This makes navigating galleries much easier. All in all, I’m thrilled with the improvements that were made. But, not everyone shares the same love for the new Facebook as I do.

So, why is there so much hate for the new version? I believe that it stems from the fact that people hate change. Even if it’s obviously for the better, people tend to be adverse to change initially and then generally come around to realize the improvements. It’s frustrating that so many people can be “against” the new Facebook but when you ask them why, they can’t tell you. I assumed it was because the mini-feed and wall were merged. Most people I’ve talked to are actually content with this change. It seems like people are frustrated with the way that Applications are handled. They have been essentially pushed down to the bottom on their own page. Like I said, I think this cleans up the page drastically…but I was never big on applications anyways. Maybe it’s something else that is fuelling all the hate?

I’m curious to see what you hate about the new facebook… so let’s hear your thoughts in the comments!

You are better at blogging than I. I have stuff to write about, but no time. Maybe this weekend I’ll get some real work done.

Yeahhh but that whole “once a day” thing didn’t last too long. That’s impossible.

I saw this somewhere on the “new facebook” but, its a website that we’re not paying to use and people are complaining? Too bad. I like the new facebook… I just had to switch back to old facebook to do profile searches (you clicked on the word search, then you could search by major, class year, things like that) Sooo if anyone knows how to do that in new facebook, I’ll love it even more.

Alexis –

There is a way to do it… You have to search for something that will take you to the search results page. Then once you are on the page there is a “Profile Search” link that will take you to the advanced search options. I agree tho, they need to have a way to get to this without searching for something initially.
